Members who ride a F 800 GS

My first bike I owned was a Honda XR250 which I bought in the early 80's. After that came the Honda XL500S. I used them more for commuting than for off-roading. When you're an appy it's the only way to go. I bought a Honda 600RR Superbike in 2004 and did the whole track thing etc and had a lot of fun. I decided beginning of 2011 to buy something more upright and gumtreed the Honda and bought my 800GS. I am sooo happy with it. I thought about the TransAlp but decided I'd spend a few bob more and treat myself. I'm married, live in Melkbos with a 25yr old daughter and two dogs. Been here since '79 so seen many changes over the years. I'm in the printing industry and have been working from home for the past 5 years.

My name is Dieter, Been in the IT industry for 15 Years, I prefer the out doors and adventure, I have spent my life around bikes, support, sweep vehicle and some restoration and building.
Hi, my name is Marius Geyser. I've been on quad bikes for the majority of my "bike-riding-life", and decided to get into Adventure Biking after moving back to Cape Town from Namibia. Already had a vicious trip to Namibia, where I learned so much on the 800. I'm keen to join the BMW club to ride and learn with all.
New BMW Rider with a F800 GS, looking for some solid advise
I am 42, married to an amazing woman and have 2 fantastic boys age 8 & 10. My GS has been considered by my wife as part of my midlife crisis, and as such between her and a good friend of ours, the bike was christened "FLUZEY", allowing latitude for all sorts of suggestive connetations. Having an offroad passion which started when I was young living in old Camps Bay which at the time allowed for a lot of BMX tracks & for some lucky kids kiddies 80cc scramblers (not myself unfortunately). When I was 18 my dad helped me buy a 1964 series 2 SWB which was then rebuilt and we used it at our holiday house in Hermanus for driving down the beach, towing the boat etc, which planted the offroad driving seed and honned my 4x4 sand skills. Since then I've owned many other landrovers and done many, many offroad trips which I really enjoy. I still have my old Series which we use regularly to take our 2 Golden retrievers to the beach and it parks alongside my F800GS in the garage (sharing stories I would imagine). My passions have always been outdoor orientated and from growing up above Glen Beach and surfing most days, as well as surf lifesaving for over 15 years with both Clifton & Llandudno Lifesaving clubs, my life has always remained water orientated. Being fortunate enough to have the opportunity I've always gravitated towards watersports including surfing, skiing, scubadiving, keel boat sailing, windsurfing, whitewater paddling etc etc with the addition of other sports like paragliding comming into the mix, for a period of my life. Enjoying adventure and often venturing off on 4x4 trips on my own & joining folk along the way, the natural progression was to get an adventure bike, which I would like to use mainly for seeing parts less travelled. Fortunately my kids enjoy the outdoors and sport as much as I do, and my 10 year old son aside from his other sports is enjoying his motocross on his KX65, but can't wait until he's old enough to get his own adv bike, however my youngest is still not sure of two wheels and prefers his little quad. Perhaps one day in the not to distant future the three of us will venture off on a GS trip with my wife following in 4x4 aircon comfort. I'm really looking forward to club events and the steep GS learning curve. Byron Herbert (aka Buzzy)

At last. After all these years I am back on a bike again.
I have spent most of my years in biking on small commuters, mainly in town to and from varsity and work. I was introduced to off roading by a friend and our first trip was through the Cockscomb section of the Baviaans to Steytlerville. Not the easiest of routes for a novice... but my small DT 175 at the time was so easy and light to handle I made the 180km round trip scratch free. En toe byt daar n’ gogga...n’ GROOT GOGGA! ! ! All I could think about was our next off road journey and destinations. Off course all the excitement, stories, videos etc. had to be shared with my wife. Sooner than later, she appeared very interested and I thought I would make a joke by asking her to try and ride my DT. Off course this silly idea was quickly dismissed with: “Are you crazy” But with a bit of persuasion and encouragement (nagging?) I managed to get my adventurous wife on the DT for her first lesson. And…she liked it! After a few rides around the neighbourhood this soon made a second gogga sink its teeth into both of us….now we had to ride together! A new purchase in the form of her own on/off road Yamaha 125 paved the way for loads of thrills (and spills) together. A few rides later with the wife and lots of talks around the fire made us consider a “real” bike. It goes without saying, with the wife’s permission before I knew it I was buying my first real bike…the GS 800. Our last trip to the 2011 BMW Bike Fest (with my wife as pillion) was the where things really went to the next level and the mother of all goggas has now struck . . . My wife wants her own “Real” bike Who am I to argue with the wife. . . this is one argument I intend to loose horribly ;-)
